How to teach English, California curriculum.
Posted by: Wayne in 2008 Issues, Economy, Immigration, PoliticsThis is the home work given to a first grader who speaks both, English and Spanish; I would say speaks more English than Spanish but does not speak English well enough to be put in a English only class. The school is getting money from every child left behind to teach them English.
Please select the correct choice
A- Vamos al lago?
1> mama y yo
2> ellasB- Pasea con su mama
1> ella
2> yo
C- van al lago
1> ella
2> ellasD- veo una totuga
1> yo
2> tu
E- esta en el lago
1> mama y yo
2> la totuga
To me this looks like a lesson in Spanish grammar. Vamos al lago? Var is a verb that means go. Yo means I. So, “Yo var al lago”, means I go to the lago. But to talk Spanish correctly, unlike English, combine the pronoun with the verb. Voy is the verb for I go. With the verb corrected one would say “Voy al lago.” Vamos means “we go”, van means “they go”. So the answer to “A” Vamos indecates talking about “mama y yo.” “B” Pasea refers to the pronoun her or I. “C” van refers to her singular or plural. “D” veo refers to I or you. “E” esta refers either to us (mama and I) or an object (a Sandwich).
They are using your tax dollars to give the kids this curriculum to learn English. I believe it is going to take a long time before they can actually become fluent English in this class. Some may think it is only the problem of the parent - those people have no business voting. The money is tax payer money and tax payers should have a say. The results of this policy is to condemn children to never learning English - and for English only speaking people, they will be dislocated out of the service economy; I will rant more about requirements to speak Spanish for employment in a different post; You can rest assured the teacher for the class had to be able to speak Spanish.
