Today at school a special little girl got into some trouble; It seems the teacher left the class and had some medicated cough drops in her desk. The little girl was blamed for taking all of them and eating all of them, she came to this conclusion by smelling the little girls breath. The teacher insisted on the spot that this is what took place, without letting the little girl speak and wanted her to be punished harshly when she got home (not just talked too about it).
The little girls story was a little different than the teachers version, she said on questioning that another child took the candy, provided a name, then reluctantly admitted that she got one from the boy, and she was caught with one; It could be inferred in her mouth. After some explanation that it is not OK to accept something from somebody that he had took from somebody else and have the little girl say that next time she would refuse to take candy that somebody took from somebody else, or money, or toys or anything. Something is still a little unsettling:
Some small child may have a stomach ache after eating too much medicated candy - the kind that numbs your throat and then numbs the nerves in your stomach if too much is taken because the teacher left medicated candy in a classroom with 20 plus children unsupervised; who at ages 5 and 6 don’t really know the difference between candy and medicines that tastes like candy. And, neither the parent nor the teacher know because while at school nobody wanted to ask probing questions in a none accusational way.
I am familiar with hall cherry flavored cough drops. I find it hard to believe the little girl ate handfuls of them, they do indeed numb your throat, two or three will numb your entire mouth, ten may or may not be enough to get you sick. But mind you the teacher said “she ate “”all”" of them!” and the bag holds about 20. OK likely she ment all that were left - in common speech that could between 5 to 15. Even taking the lowest possible number that the teacher infers was eaten 5 we are talking about the children being unsupervised for likely between more than 5 and close to 15 minutes. One candy per minute and a few minutes to get the candy.
