Gratitude: It seems we have a habit of saying we are grateful when we receive things … and at this particular moment I don’t think it completely descriptives gratitude; even more so when considering that this is a free country where most of the time poor people get enough to eat. We don’t actually need to be hungry to be thankful that there are people who will feed the hungry just because they are - we don’t actually need to have no money and receive free food in a park to be thankful.

I think my best metaphor would be to describe how children by nature understand how to love. My daughter at the age of five at a Christmas festival saw her first Lama - to say she liked it would be an understatement; love filled every part of her being, she hugged it, she walked it, she fed it. The Lama did not mind, it liked being fed, was fairly indifferent to being walked, and accepted being hugged; But, it did not return the affect. The feeling that was born in my daughter’s heart and completely filled her was not created by receiving - it was created by giving.
