Use regedit and search for ShellFolder it will locate entries like hkey_classes_root\CLSID\{48e7caab-b918-4e58-a94d-505519c795dc}\shellfolder selecting the number hkey_classes_root\CLSID\{48e7caab-b918-4e58-a94d-505519c795dc}\ tells you this is the start menu folder. atlas naming a folder to:
start menu .{48e7caab-b918-4e58-a94d-505519c795dc}
brings up the start menu. I can not think of any reason I would like to have that as an Icon on my usb drive? I’ve got alot of shellfolders on my clean installation of WinXP many with no name given indicating what they bring up. None with the name of desktop CLSID, of course.
Note: installing programs, such as winzip, the programs can install additional shellfolders … I used winzip as an example because it does indeed install one.
Update:
The correct location to look for “microsoft’s” shell folders is
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\shell folders
The story of their birth and why they still exist can be read at
